Ajose: Nigeria Can't Win London 2012 Boxing Medal
Commonwealth Light Welterweight champion and WBC Super
Lightweight contender, OlusegunAjose, has reiterated that the country’s boxing
contingent to the London 2012 Olympic Games
this stands no chance of winning any medal.
Ajose cited inadequate preparation for his pessimism on the team’s chances.
“Even though these guys have the talent, that alone cannot
take them to be among the best in a big event like the Olympics. Most times, we ask for too much from them.
It’s like asking a young boy to go and fight on your behalf with someone with a
gun without arming him, you’ve set him up for defeat already,” he said.
“These guys are good, and if they manage to perform, all
well and good. But if we expect them to win gold medals and they don’t win,
then nobody should blame them because they didn’t prepare well enough to win a
gold medal. And based on what I know about the Olympics, their chances are very
slim.”
Ajose who represented Nigeria
at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games in Australia
also revealed that he is likely to fight before the year ends.
“I was supposed to fight Danny Garcia for the world title,
but he tried to find a way to fight for a unification bout against the WBA
former champion Amir Khan. Now, the fight will go ahead and the WBC has
mandated that the winner has to fight me as the mandatory challenger.”
